China Airlines A330-300 business class: proof that it doesn’t have to look good in order to feel good

China Airlines has several versions of A330-300 regional business class product flying around at the moment. What you’re about to read is a full review of their oldest (and least premium) version of it.

Wait! Before you hit that back button on your browser, just know that despite its age (and the way it looks), it’s still an awfully competitive intra-Asia business class product IMHO.

Don’t worry. Life won’t suck if this is the version you get stuck with.

Checking in at the Manila International Airport

My timely arrival at MNL was a miracle if I don’t say so myself. A typhoon was hitting the Philippines hard the morning of my departure. Not only was I expecting the taxi ride to the airport to be an adventure (it was), I was fully expecting this flight to be delayed – or even canceled (it wasn’t).

At least that’s where I think I’m at. It’s early, and there’s one hell of a typhoon going on, so my guess is as good as yours.
Terminal 1 ticketing hall Manila international airport
And the award for the airport with the most wide open (ballroom-like) ticketing hall goes to…MNL! If that’s where I’m actually at, I mean.

The check-in process was extremely busy and chaotic. Thankfully business class passengers, such as myself got to use the much shorter and faster Sky Priority lane. I was checked in and through security within 15 minutes.

China airlines check in Manila airport
Welp, this is the queue to check in for my flight to Taipei, so this pretty much confirms that I’m at the right airport. Maybe? I’m not celebrating until I have my boarding pass in hand.

The dude in front of me here in the Sky Priority lane looks as confused as I am. Oh well. At least this line is moving a lot quicker than the line for economy class.
Inside of terminal 1 manila international airport
I’m in! Terminal 1 here at MNL is nice – but a little small IMHO. I wonder what the reason was for making the ticketing hall so huge and the terminal so puny?

There’s no need to ponder questions I will never know the answer to. I’ve got a plane to catch!
Gate 3 terminal 1 Manila international airport
I have arrived at gate 3. Hopefully, if everything goes to plan, I will be departing from here as well.

Look who else just arrived? This was especially convenient considering that my plan to depart necessitated the need for this China Airlines A330-300 to not only show up, but to show up in airworthy condition. Looks good from here I guess.

The boarding process

Just as noisy and crowded as it was during the check-in process, the gate area for this flight was more of the same. Every seat was occupied, and I found myself pacing around patiently waiting for them to begin the boarding process.

US passport and China airlines boarding pass at Manila airport
Passport? Check. Boarding pass? Check. Confidence that I will actually make my connection in Taipei? Hoo boy.

They called for business class passengers to board immediately after families with small children (and those needing extra time). Don’t mind if I do!

Props to the China Airlines ground staff for organizing all the chaos in the gate area so well.

“Welcome aboard sir! Never mind my colleague making structural repairs to this aircraft with duct tape. We hope you have a great flight!”

China Airlines A330-300 regional business class seats and cabin

No matter what version of China Airlines A330-300 regional business class you’re flying, it’s going to be a high-density 2-2-2 layout. The older layout on this particular aircraft is just as spacious as the newer version, and is equally as comfortable.

China Airlines A330-300 business class cabin
China Airlines A330-300 business class. I’d be willing to bet pretty much anything that every person in this picture was still thinking about the duct tape.
China Airlines A330-300 business class seat 3A
Seat 3A (my seat for this flight up to Taipei). And how old was that duct tape exactly?
China Airlines A330-300 business class legroom
That’s a lot of legroom! I wonder what other parts of this aircraft are taped together?

The seats are very wide with very generous legroom. They felt like they had slightly more width than what I experienced in Korean Air 747-8 business class, but the legroom is about the same.

China Airlines A330-300 business class video screens
Big seat, little video screen. You ain’t interacting with that sh*t without a remote control.
China Airlines A330-300 business class seat control buttons and remote control for the in-flight entertainment system integrated into the center armrest
Speak of the devil. Those buttons just above the remote control for the in-flight entertainment system are the controls for the seat BTW.
China Airlines A330-300 business class storage compartments
And would you look at that? I actually stopped thinking about the duct tape for a moment the storage compartments in these seats are convenient and plentiful.

Business class amenities

Within five minutes of sitting down, the cabin crew came by offering a pre-departure drink (orange juice, water, or champagne). They followed that up very quickly with hot towels.

The pre-departure drink. Not gonna lie, it was fun to pretend that she was actually enjoying watching me drink this orange juice. “Oh Scott, you sexy beast you…”
China Airlines A330-300 business class hot towel
Next came the hot towel (perfect for wiping away my delusions).

There were slippers and noise canceling headphones located in the seat pocket upon boarding. There are no amenity kits provided on these short regional routes.

Not only that, they also include high quality blankets and pillows. The pillows are no joke BTW. It was easily as comfortable (and almost as large) as the one that I have at home.

You’d be surprised how easily a comfortable pillow will cancel out the fear of flying on an aircraft held together with duct tape. I’m good.

Departure from Manila

We got lucky. The rain and wind had pretty much stopped by the time that we pushed off the gate at 11:02 AM. Yeah, that was 27 minutes behind schedule, but when you’re expecting the flight to be canceled because of weather, 27 minute delays ain’t nothin’ but a thing.

Whatever the Philippine word for “later dudes!” is, it goes here.
Philippines airlines Q400 at MNL
One of many subtle reminders that I was an idiot for not choosing to fly the Philippine national airline. I’m sorry, but China Airlines was cheaper!
Cebu Pacific A330-900 at MNL
Another reminder. Although, in the case of Cebu Pacific, my only excuse is convenience. Of course I would’ve loved to fly on one of these Cebu A330-900’s today, but F me if the schedule didn’t make any damn sense. 12:20am departure? hahaha WTF nope lol u crazy.

The taxi out to runway 06 took 29 minutes. For some reason or another there seemed to be a lot of stop and go along the way, but we eventually made it. Takeoff was at exactly 11:31 AM.

No you guys, Manila doesn’t look like an envelope. It’s a beautiful city actually, and I can’t wait to go back someday.

No caption. Just views. And regret (that I didn’t stay longer).

In-flight entertainment

There are video screens at every seat in China Airlines A330-300 regional business class. However, those screens are small, very pixelated, and not very bright.

What the screen lacks in quality is made up for in the catalogue of content. Most of the TV shows and movies (and audio selections) were Asian, but there was lots of it, and most of it looked pretty good IMHO.

Remember the Windows Phone from 2010? China Airlines remembers.

When you flip to the map screen and start stressing out due to the fact that there’s no way in hell you’ll be able to watch all of those movies and TV shows before you get to Taipei.
China Airlines A330-300 business class wired remote control for the in-flight entertainment system
I may not have been able to watch it all, but I sure as hell was able to interact with it thanks to this wired remote control. The entire back side of this thing is a QWERTY keyboard by the way. Just thought you’d like to know.

My only complaint about the noise canceling headphones is that they were a little big (and therefore, not so comfortable). They did sound good though.

Nice big cans (about size DD I reckon).

The meal service

This flight from Manila to Taipei clocked in at less than an hour and 45 minutes, but that didn’t stop the cabin crew from doing a full meal service. There were two options available (chicken or beef) and was pretty much what I would expect for an intra-Asia regional flight.

China Airlines A330-300 business class lunch menu
Lunch menus were provided prior to push back from the gate back at MNL, and the flight attendants came by taking orders before takeoff. The chili pepper icon next to the chicken option looked really scary to this pasty white Midwesterner, so…the beef it is.
China Airlines A330-300 business class beef stew meal
It is the beef! More specifically, classic braised beef stew served with buttery tomato rice.
I can’t even imagine what the chicken was like, because this beef had me wincing in pain despite the lack of a scary chili pepper icon next to it on the menu. It was good though.
China Airlines A330-300 business class Häagen-Dazs ice cream
The antidote for beef that wasn’t supposed to be spicy but actually was? Häagen-Dazs strawberries and cream ice cream. Of course.

Overall, the food was pretty good. It was more like a high-end TV dinner if I’m being honest, but I’m not hoity toity enough to refuse that sort of thing. It was tasty.

Seat recline and comfort

Yes. These seats do recline fully flat, but there’s a catch. It’s an angled recline, meaning that they don’t lay fully perpendicular to the ground. Not a big deal, considering that they don’t use these aircraft on long haul routes. I didn’t even recline my seat that far on this flight to be honest.

China Airlines A330-300 business class seat control panel buttons
Look at all them buttons! This seat control panel is a lot like what I experienced in Aeromexico 787-8 business class, so I already knew that I was in for a really good time.
China Airlines A330-300 business class angled lie flat seat recline
These are angled lie flat seats. Key word: angled. It is comfy though.
China Airlines A330-300 business class extendable leg rest
And that leg rest? Not necessarily a game changer IMHO, but it was a’ight.
China Airlines A330-300 business class demonstration of the integrated leg rest and foot rest
There’s actually a little foot rest built into the leg rest. It’s dual action!

The cabin temperature was a little bit too warm for my liking, but otherwise everything else was pretty much perfect. The nearly full-size pillow combined with a very soft blanket made it a very luxurious experience.

China Airlines A330-300 business class cabin lights off
All you vampires Anyone hoping for a completely dark cabin after the meal service should know that they never turned the cabin lights off completely. If it’s black hole darkness you desire, it’ll behoove you to bring a really good eye mask.

The descent and arrival into Taipei

The weather over eastern Taiwan was just as bad as it was when we left the Philippines an hour and 45 minutes earlier. The rain was coming down in buckets and visibility was extremely poor.  Not exactly the best conditions for a fearful flyer (or an inexperienced pilot).

China Airlines A330-300 business class playing cards
Oh! Pre-landing cigarettes!
China Airlines A330-300 business class playing cards as a pre-landing gift
Just kidding. It’s actually a deck of playing cards, and as usual, I’ve drawn a losing hand.
China Airlines A330-300 landing on runway 05L at TPE
Welcome to Taipei, where the current weather is typhoon with a 100% chance of more typhoon later.

We touched down on runway 05L 36 minutes behind schedule at 1:16 PM. This was inconvenient considering how tight my connection to Tokyo Narita already was, but it helped to stop looking at the time on my phone. Ignorance is bliss!

The taxi over to gate D1 took 8 minutes, and we were docked at 1:24 PM. Yeah, we were a little bit late, but it wasn’t too bad considering the sketchy weather on both ends of this journey.

Unbuckling my seatbelt in China Airlines A330-300 business class
In my opinion, the best way to judge an in flight experience is to calculate how long it takes for my brain to send the signal to my hands to unbuckle the seatbelt. It took a little longer than usual this time, so…China Airlines A330-300 business class is pretty good I guess.
China Airlines A330-300 business class seat after the flight
I put my backpack down on the seat in hopes of getting his opinion to close out this review. All that MFr did was berate me for stuffing him in the overhead bin while I enjoyed all this luxury down here. Can’t say that I didn’t deserve it.

Final thoughts (more of a recommendation really)

As I said at the beginning of this review, don’t worry so much if you end up on an older China Airlines A330-300 with this particular business class product. China Airlines business class cabin crews are always great no matter what style of seat you’re sitting in, and you’re almost guaranteed to have a great experience.

These seats are wide, very plush, and decently comfortable for sleeping. You wouldn’t have to twist my arm to do it again.
